I composed this group of short pieces for piano individually, as experiments in re-imagining traditional musical forms as they would be written in a modern musical language. The Prelude consists of dense, bell-like harmonies; the Canon skirts the line between jazzy and dodecophonic as three voices imitate each other in irregular time; the Sarabande is slow and plaintive; and the Rite of Fugue consists of a fugue whose subject is pieced together out of several themes from Stravinsky's “Rite of Spring.”
