The title “Toccata Batucada” represents a fusion of Western classical and Brazilian popular music. A toccata is a virtuosic keyboard work in an improvisatory style with fast scales, arpeggios, and broken chords. “Batucada” refers to a style of samba played by a large percussion ensemble, referenced by the sounds of the prepared piano.

Though this piece was originally intended as a prepared piano piece, the composer recognizes the complications inherent in preparing a piano as directed. It may be played without the piano preparations, with the knowledge that the "prepared" notes are intended to reference percussion sounds.
